Let's be real, how could you go wrong in choosing to elope in a region like The Northeast!?

We (Robert, Vincent, & Gretchen) were all born in the Northeast and over the years have called many places in the Northeast home. We love exploring and adventuring in all the amazing places found in this part of the country. Some of our favorite locations are the White Mountains, Baxter State Park, Acadia National Park, and the Cape Breton Isle

A big misconception in the elopement world is that you must go to Colorado or the Pacific North West to elope because that is what most of us have seen on social media. Well, we are here to change that. We absolutely love out west, in fact we have all spent time living in Wyoming and Montana and we consider it a piece of our hearts. Nevertheless, the Northeast has our hearts. We have all spent countless hours exploring the deep forests of New England, hiking the rugged mountains of New Hampshire, and swimming in the cold waters off Maine's coast. This region of the country is right next to some hidden gems on Canada's East Coast. Many people do not realize that there are so many great places in the Northeast to elope. So, let us see what eloping in the Northeast could look like.

We specialize in the White Mountains and the state of Maine, but have decent local knowledge throughout the entire Northeast region. We lump everything from Pennsylvania to Newfoundland as part of the Northeast. Thanks to Boston and NYC we even find a spot for Iceland on the list. The North East offers a wide variety of options from the dramatic views of Iceland, to the simple hills of Pennsylvania. In this guide we will highlight our top locations in the Northeast to elope including the White Mountains, Maine, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland/Labrador, and Iceland.

If you're thinking of eloping in The Northeast you've come to the right place

The Northeast is sometimes overlooked for it's gorgeous peaks, extensive wilderness, and rugged coastline.

BUT first,

why should you elope?

We believe eloping offers the ability to get married EXACTLY how you want in the location you want. Larger weddings can come with a host of other opinions, unwanted stress, traditions, and the pressure to throw an extravagant party. We believe that is just not for everyone and that is okay. We hope to inspire and ignite an excitement in you to create the wedding day of your dreams!!

Let's dive in, shall we?

The Best time

Season

What are the crowds like?

What is the best time of day?

The seasons have a big impact on outdoor activities in the Norhteast. Typically, for the Northeast, the high peaks start getting snow mid November, and in the valley around the beginning of December depending on the location.

The Northeast is known for the intense, bitter cold winters with early sunsets, cloudy days, and chilly nights. During the early spring months of April and May the ground begins to defrost and become muddy, the snow in the high peaks begin to melt. In late May, the White Mountains and Maine, begin getting green, the air is cool and moist with the rainfall. In the U.S, June is the best time for wildflowers, and the lupines are in full bloom usually the first week of this month.

In July and August the Northeast receives a lot of visitors coming for camping trips or for family vacations. Trails in the White Mountains, Baxter, and the Bigelows are busy as avid hikers check the rugged peaks off their list. Acadia and Bar Harbor are bustling as visitors rush around soaking up every minute of their time in Maine. The coastal air is cool and damp. The smell of the pine carries a sweet smell as the needles are crushed on the damp mossy ground. In July and August, Iceland receives a large amount of tourists traveling to the continent to experience the jagged coast, large waterfalls, and thermal waters.

In September and October the leaves on the trees start to change to golden shades of yellow, orange, and bright red. In Northern Maine and Northern New Hampshire peak fall is usually around the first week in October. On the Coast of Maine Peak fall is usually around the second to third week of October. During this time Iceland is still bustling but as winter quickly approaches the tourists return to their homeland before the winter frost.

As you can expect, the Northeast can get crowded during the peak seasons of July-September because of it's raw untouched beauty. This means that popular spots and hikes can get over crowded with tourists and hikers.

Good thing that the Northeast (while considered small) has beauty extends way beyond Acadia National Park. Do not be deceived into thinking the only option for eloping is in the National Park. The Northeast has so many state parks, preserves, and national forests that can make any elopement day an absolute vibe. Iceland has many tourist locations along the Ring Road, however, going deeper into the wilderness will reduce the amount of people seen.

The best advice to avoid the crowds in the Northeast is to get married during the week, Monday-Thursday & get married late in the off season. (May & September)  This is when most families and vacationers are getting back into routines of work and school which usually lends to the parks and preserves being less crowded. Another option is to go to a lesser known area and do a hike longer than 4 miles.

The Northeast is pretty wooded but anywhere above the tree line or along the coast has the potential for harsh sunny days. This not only causes harsh direct light on the mountains but also causes those unwanted nose and eyebrow shadows that are less than flattering. That means that the best times for pictures is at sunrise or sunset when the sun is low, soft, and warm.

If you are worried about crowds in Acadia, sunrise in a place other than Cadillac Mountain would be a good time to elope because not too many people are out at 3am.  Cadillac Mountain is one of the first places to see the sunrise, but elopement ceremonies are not allowed there at sunrise. There are many other places in the park that are awesome sunrise locations.

One thing to note is that the coast is often very foggy. Rain and wind is very common in the Northeast especially on the coast. If you want the mood of a foggy day for your elopement, the Northeast Coast might be the perfect place for you!

Location is key

Location

The Northeast has so many options for locations it can sometimes be a little overwhelming trying to figure out where to go. The good thing is, whatever you decide will be so special and beautiful! The Northeast has Acadia National Park, The White Mountains in New Hampshire, and many state parks & preserves to explore. The Northeast has many spots across our northern border in Canada like Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Iceland!

This guide will cover four of our favorite place in the Northeast to hopefully inspire you to think of all the possibilities for your wedding day.

1. The White Mountains
2. Maine
3. Nova Scotia, Canada
4. Newfoundland/Labrador
5. Iceland

Depending on what kind of adventure you want for you wedding day will determine what area you want to explore. All of these places offer beautiful scenery that is perfectly the Northeast. Eloping in any of these areas will be an adventure to remember as you embark on this new journey together.

The White Mountains

New Hampshire is a small state tucked away in the northeast corner of the country. It may be small, but it is a wild mountain state with tall, rugged peaks that challenge even the best mountaineers. New Hampshire is home to the White Mountain National Forest which consists of 115,000 acres of land and forty-eight peaks rising above 4000 feet. The tall rocky summits make this the most rugged mountain range in the east.

The White Mountains offers many peaks above the tree line, gorgeous valleys lined with maple trees that turn vibrant warm colors in early October. The peaks start getting snow in November and will be under snow until April. The Whites are a great spot for resort ski trips and backcountry adventures. There is also incredible trout fishing in the streams and ponds and incredible ATV trails in the hills.

A HUGE plus to eloping in the White Mountains is that you do not need a permit for your ceremony!

Elope in the Whites!

Maine

The most North Eastern state in the U.S. provides a vast amount of different landscapes perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Maine is known for lobsters, thick evergreen forests, rugged coastline, and tall peaks. The state receives the highest amounts of visitors during the months of July & August when the weather is warm. Acadia National Park is on an island off the coast and is one of the busiest areas during the summer. The mountains coming out of the sea and the rugged cliffs really are beautiful.

Acadia may be the gem of the coast, but inland, Baxter State Park has views of the state in all directions. Baxter is home to Mount Katahdin, which is Maine's highest peak.

elope here!

Nova Scotia, Canada

East of Maine, there is a peninsula of land called Nova Scotia. It is a 7 1/2 hour drive from Bar Harbor and about a 3 1/2 hour ferry ride from Bar Harbor. Nova Scotia, like the coast of Maine, offers rugged cliffs, gorgeous sunrises, and incredible mountains by the sea. The coastline is dotted with cute, quiet fishing towns. This area is not heavily populated leaving trails and locations relatively crowd free. Nova Scotia offers a variety of activities for outdoor lovers. Some include cross country skiing, dog sledding, fall leaf peeping, sea kayaking, fishing, waterfall chasing, hiking, and mountain biking.

The primary language in Nova Scotia is English which makes it easy for traveling to this gorgeous province. Average temperatures for Nova Scotia during the winter is less than 40 degrees, with February being the coldest month with an average temperature of 20 degrees. From May through October the average temperatures are 50s-70s with July and August being the warmest months on average.

In Nova Scotia tourists come to visit primarily between July through September when the summer temperatures are ideal. October is also a big time for travelers coming to this area for the fall foliage and festivals.

Elope in Nova Scotia!

Newfoundland/Labrador

Canada's easternmost province is Newfoundland. This province is comprised of an island which is Newfoundland and Labrador which is on the mainland. Newfoundland is the lost treasure of Canada. The landscapes are the perfect mix between Iceland and Maine.

Traveling to Newfoundland can be done a few ways. If you plan on driving there, the best option would be to take the ferry from Nova Scotia to the island. This ferry is about 6-8 hours long. You are able to drive through Quebec for a shorter ferry ride, but the drive is much longer. The other option is to fly. You can expect to fly into either St. Johns, Gander, or Deer Lake. We have found that the best flights out of the U.S. to locations like this are usually out of Boston. Read more about travel to Newfoundland here.

We guarantee Newfoundland will blow your mind with its beauty. The tall mountains and stunning coastlines will not disappoint. The cool summer weather make this an outdoor enthusiasts dream.

Iceland

Located in the Northern Atlantic between Greenland and Norway lies the historical Viking  Capital, Iceland. Iceland is known for its vast and dramatic landscapes. The rugged coastline, geothermal lakes, volcanoes, tall jagged peaks. large glaciers, and lava fields make this place other worldly.

In recent years, Iceland has become a hotspot for tourists to come from all over the world to witness the overwhelming beauty. Iceland is accessed by the famous Ring Road which keeps Iceland's infrastructure alive. This famous road connects all the little towns together and provides a loop for tourists and adventurers to experience Icelands beauty. It is recommended that visitors plan a minimum of 6 days during the summer months to travel this road with 10-14 days being ideal. During the winter months due to harsh conditions it is recommended to take a minimum of 12 days to travel with 20-25 days being ideal.

The average temperature in the winter months is in the mid 20s F, and the summer temperatures average around 54 degrees with possible temperature ranging from 44-70 F.

While many choose to explore Iceland via the Ring Road there is also extensive backpacking opportunities in Iceland to go deeper into the wilderness to explore. This way of adventuring helps to ensure that your elopement day is exclusive to you and would help decrease the amount of people surrounding you as you say "I do." Backpackers should always use extreme caution especially considering the harsh conditions in Iceland.

What we do.

Ok, let's be real. Your photographer/videographer spends most of your elopement day with you, so you want to make sure you hire one who you like! Not only will they be with you all day, but for adventure elopements, they will also be your guides. Finding someone who is knowledgeable in the outdoors is so important for adventure elopements.

As a photo & video team, we will help you plan your ideal day, and help bring your dream to life. We will guide you on a beautiful, fun adventure for your big day. We will capture the big iconic moments and the little in-between moments.

With Gretchen's wedding photography experience and Robert's landscape/adventure experience, you will be getting the ultimate coverage on your wedding day. You will be getting a gallery of images and a cinematic documentary of your day from two artists who are trained to capture two very different things. The combination of the two is perfect for an adventure elopement.

Planning, guiding, and documenting is our specialty, so let's work together!

LEt's bring your dream to life

Okay, this all sounds great but what makes Rendezvous Elopements different from any other elopement photographer?

We have a combined 10 years of experience in the photography industry. Robert he has been working at mastering landscapes, adventure, and brand photography. Gretchen has been a wedding photographer for the past 5 years. In 2021 we decided to join forces. Coupled with our love for the outdoors, Rendezvous was born.

We are a photo and video team specializing in adventure elopements. We believe eloping is such a unique way to get married, and understand it does not always allow for everyone you love to attend. By offering photo & video we can bridge the gap between eloping and including loved ones. A video allows those not in attendance to fully experience the day. They can hear the waves crashing against the rocks and hear the emotion in your voices. The combination of photo and video documentation is the perfect way to capture an intimate and epic wedding day.

TWO WORDS. PEAK FALL.

national park permits

Accessibility: The Northeast is easily accessible  by car through I95. If you'd rather fly there are several major airports in the Northeast including: Portland, ME; Boston, MA; NYC; Bangor, ME; Reykjavik, Iceland; St. Johns, NL.

Peak Fall: *think Gilmore girls rich autumn colors*

National Park Permits: The North East (specifically Acadia) is a little behind the elopement game unlike its big sisters (Rocky Mountain, Glacier, and GTNP) meaning the process for permits is less stressful. In Acadia, permits are not required for elopements with less than 10 guests.

Local Culture: The Northeast has a vibrant local community full of fishermen, trade workers, artists, and outdoorsmen.

Outdoor Community: Northeast culture is based in the outdoors. The outdoor community is strong and welcoming to all.

Many people may choose to elope in the Northeast because it’s home or close to it! The Northeast has so many options for eloping that can fit your ideal day. Do you want to go on an epic adventure and kayak to an island to get married in the Atlantic? Perhaps backpack into the mountains and say “I do” under a sea of stars? If this sounds like you, hit us up!

As far as accessibility for disability goes. There are two large peaks in the North East that you can drive a car up which is awesome! Mount Washington in New Hampshire has an auto road cars can drive up. Cadillac Mountain in Acadia also has a road that cars can drive up. Acadia's loop road offers many spots that are easily accessible fo those who can not walk too far. In Cape Breton Highlands there is a gondola at Cape Smokey that would be ideal for those how have trouble hiking.

Traveling can be so expensive with car rentals, flight delays, hotels, etc. the costs adds up! The Northeastern U.S. is a small area so travel is not too bad. For example, Boston is 2 hours from the White Mountains and 5 hours from Acadia. There are also daily flights from Boston to Bar Harbor. If you are in Boston, flights to Reykjavik, Iceland take about 6 hours.

This is allows you to get to some pretty amazing places pretty fast.

We may not have snowcapped peaks in July but we have a pretty INSANE autumn. I can almost smell the crisp dry air, the pumpkin spice, the cozy evenings.  Peak fall in Northern Maine, Western Maine, and the White Mountains is usually in the beginning of October. Peak fall in Acadia occurs usually around the second and third week of October. The weather does affect when this happens so its a little different each year.

Okay if you are new to the elopement game, first off, welcome. Deep breath! Most if not all by now, National Parks in the US require a permit to “elope” in their park. I say “elope” because even if you say vows outside of the park, some parks still require a permit to have your portraits taken there. It’s not as overwhelming as it seems. Best bet? Pick the park you want to get married in and then do research. We will help you with this once you book with us!

Park Permits essentially keep us all safe, it keeps these parks beautiful by limiting the amount of people traipsing around in wedding attire. It allows your day to be about you! Elopements have become an increasingly popular way to get married which we are ALL for. This can overwhelm smaller National Parks just due to many couples wanting to get married in epic locations. Again, we get it.

The permits allow your day to be about you. Thankfully, Acadia is less well known for elopements which means it is less of a struggle to get a permit. Many couples try to elope in these larger National Parks during peak season which backs up the permit department causing delayed acceptance of permits.
